Troubleshoot: Carry-forward

Fix common issues with carry-forward automations and per-note carry-forward

Fellow has two ways to use carry-forward: an automation you enable in your note series settings, and a manual option you trigger from within an individual note. This article covers how to troubleshoot issues with both methods.

Carry-forward: Settings

When carry-forward automation is enabled in your note series settings, it applies to that specific meeting going forward. Enabling it on an existing meeting will not apply retroactively; it only affects notes created after the setting is turned on.

Incomplete items not being carried forward

Please first confirm that your carry-forward automations are enabled within your settings.

Completed Items Carrying Forward

If a completed item appears in the next note, it was most likely not marked as complete at the time the next note was created. To confirm, check the note history of the note to see when the item was marked complete, then compare that date to when the next note was generated.

Note: Note History is only available to Team plans (and above)

New notes in a meeting can be viewed by clicking into a future instance of that event in the Meetings view in the left panel. Any user within the meeting can do this.

Carry-forward: Per-Note

Tips:

  • When using per-note carry-forward, make sure you are clicking the โ‹ฎ (vertical three-dot) menu within the note you want to bring incomplete items into, not the note you are carrying items from.

  • If you plan to use per-note carry-forward, disable the carry-forward automation in your note series settings. Using both methods at the same time will cause items to be carried forward twice.

Per-Note: Carry-forward options greyed out

If one or both carry-forward options appear greyed out in the drop-down menu, this indicates there are no incomplete items of this type in the prior note to carry-forward.

Below you can see that "Carry forward action items" is greyed out and not clickable. This means the prior note has no incomplete action items.

Duplicated items after carry-forward

If you are seeing duplicate items after carrying forward, there are two likely causes:

  1. Per-note carry-forward was used more than once on the same note: Check your note history to see when items were carried forward. Version history is available on Team plans and above

  2. Both carry-forward methods are active at the same time: If you are using both the meeting-level automation and the per-note function, items will carry forward once from each method separately. Disable the automation in your note series settings if you want to use per-note carry-forward only

  3. Check the applied template: confirm if these duplicated items are saved in the template applied to your meeting series
