Customize your Fellow interface and reduce eye strain

Dark mode transforms Fellow's interface from light backgrounds to darker tones, reducing eye strain in low-light environments and potentially extending battery life on laptops and mobile devices. You can manually select dark mode, keep Fellow in light mode, or set it to match your computer's system settings for seamless switching throughout the day.

Dark mode is available on all Fellow plans including Free.

Why Use Dark Mode

Dark mode offers several benefits depending on your work environment and preferences:

  • Reduce eye strain: Darker backgrounds are easier on your eyes in low-light settings or during long work sessions

  • Save battery life: Dark pixels use less power on OLED and AMOLED screens, extending laptop and mobile battery life

  • Match your system: Use System Default to keep Fellow consistent with your other applications

  • Personal preference: Some people simply prefer the aesthetic of dark interfaces

Theme Options Explained

Fellow offers three interface theme options to match your preferences:

System Default

  • Fellow automatically matches your computer's theme setting

  • If your system is set to Auto, Fellow switches between light and dark based on time of day

  • Best for users who want consistency across all applications

Light Theme

  • Traditional light backgrounds with dark text

  • Best for bright environments or if you prefer high contrast

Dark Theme

  • Dark backgrounds with light text

  • Best for low-light environments or extended screen time

How to Enable Dark Mode

  1. Click on your profile icon in the bottom left corner of Fellow

  2. Select User Settings from the menu

  3. In User Settings, click on Preferences in the left sidebar

  4. Scroll to the Appearance section

  5. Under Interface theme, you'll see three options:

    1. System Default - Matches your computer's theme settings

    2. Light Theme - Always uses light mode

    3. Dark Theme - Always uses dark mode

  6. Click your preferred option and Fellow immediately updates to reflect your selection. The interface theme changes instantly without requiring a refresh.

You can change your theme setting at any time by returning to User Settings > Preferences > Appearance.

Troubleshooting

Dark mode not applying

Possible causes:

  • Browser cache is preventing the theme from updating

  • You selected System Default but your system theme isn't set correctly

Solutions:

  1. Try selecting Dark Theme directly instead of System Default

  2. Refresh your browser page (Cmd/Ctrl + R)

  3. Clear your browser cache and reload Fellow

  4. Check your computer's system theme settings if using System Default

Dark mode keeps switching automatically

Cause: You have System Default selected and your computer is set to Auto mode, which switches themes based on time of day.

Solution: If you prefer consistent dark mode, select Dark Theme instead of System Default.

Some elements still appear in light mode

Cause: Embedded content or certain UI elements may not fully support dark mode.

Solution: This is expected behavior for some embedded media. Most Fellow interface elements support dark mode, but third-party embedded content maintains its original appearance.

Theme looks different on mobile vs desktop

Cause: Mobile and desktop apps may have separate theme settings.

Solution: Check theme preferences in each platform's settings:

  • Desktop/Web: User Settings > Preferences > Appearance

  • Mobile: App settings within the Fellow mobile app
